Love this game! The graphics, music, sound effects, and simple controls make it really easy to pick up, and super difficult to put down! Huey is a really lovable character and the voice acting is impeccable. After getting a score of over 9000 the game seems a little repetitive and mostly RNG-based, though, so here are some suggestions!
I think the game would benefit from a different type of enemy late game (over 500 meters maybe) that is a bird with 360 vision or something like that, to add some spice. maybe make a fake bush that hurts you, which would be cool. as well, it would be cool to see a higher point value cricket to reward players who take risks. Getting caught in a bird's vision and then getting to safety could also give points, to reward risk-takers!
There are some technical issues like impassable logs and less than one-second mutation times, but I think the biggest one is the hearts go off the screen! this is a big hindrance when I'm playing late game and fixing it would be as simple as adding a second row.
Congratulations on winning the jam, you really deserve it! All of my feedback is purely my own opinions, none of this stuff is really urgent! I would love to see some more updates soon and long live Huey!!!
P.S. The score takes like 4 minutes to load at the end maybe make it a bit quicker!
P.P.S. Is there a pause menu I couldn't find one that would be super nice.
Great game. If any updates are possible, I would love a way to load the highscore quicker. I was sitting for a couple minutes having to load the score. I tried hitting escape once, which brings you back to the main menu, but I'm not sure if it posts the score to the leaderboard.
What an awesome game! Really well done and complete. I loved the concept and mechanics. The only thing I would change is making the mutation timer more evident - having it on the bottom right of the screen made it a bit hard to pay attention to.
Really nice game, looks really polished and professional. The whole backstory with the voice acting, the gameplay, the cute characters. Also, being able to control your chameleon while the story is being told is a nice touch. All in all, really professional and well-made!
I do have a few suggestions. I know it's the nature of the game and of UCD, but the random color changes feel really unfair, it makes the game almost purely luck-based. Especially when hiding in a bush and your color shifts when there's a predator near, you can't really do anything to avoid getting pecked. It's a bit of a weird thing to change, because why would a disease suddenly stop while hiding in a bush, but still ... perhaps the option to dash (with a cooldown) could help?
And, please make the score counting skippable, it's pretty annoying to have to wait for it when you're eager to play another round.
After playing it some more I do think the randomness might be a bigger issue than I first said. It's kinda frustrating that as soon as a bird has spotted you there's virtually no chance you can dodge it.
Also, not being able to see when you will change color makes it completely unpredictable. Maybe, in addition to my previous ideas:
Adding a short indication that a color change is about to happen so you can anticipate, if you're quick
Make the steering of the birds slightly less direct, so you have a bit more chance to dodge them
I agree that the current gameplay features and balancing sometimes boil down to (bad) luck. We considered adding ways to move quicker, like a dash, a sticky tongue, or even teleporting, but sadly, we didn't have enough time to implement those.
You can see when and to what color you're changing via the UI in the bottom right. A sound, like a countdown, before the change is a great idea.
Now that I'm thinking about it, an alternative way to communicate this to the player without adding more UI is to make Huey's skin color blink two seconds before he changes, back and forth, from the current to the new color.
Great input, thanks Swoopie! Glad you enjoyed playing as Hueeeeeeeeeeeeeee
This game is so fun and relaxing (until you get eaten)! I honestly forgot that I was on itch.io and wasn't playing an official Google browser game (it felt very polished and the art/audio style is great).

Hey Skullzah, thanks for the comment. We are going to work on a update tomorrow and also fix the counter issue :)
Thanks for playing, and keep eating those crickets
